RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
Fall Litter Sweep
Every April and September, NCDOT asks volunteers across the state to help remove litter from roadsides.
This year, NCDOT’s annual Fall Litter Sweep will run from Sept. 11-25.
During the Litter Sweep, volunteers across the state take time out of their schedules to collect trash along North Carolina’s roadways. NCDOT crews and contractors also redouble their efforts during the sweep.
During this year’s Spring Litter Sweep, a record setting 1.4 million pounds of litter were picked up in those two weeks alone. In addition, NCDOT is on pace to make 2021 a record setting year for total roadside litter pickups, surpassing the 10.5 million pounds of trash that was collected in 2019.
Everyone can do their part to help prevent litter from collecting on roadsides by always:
- Securing your load before driving.
- Never throwing thrash out of your vehicle’s window.
Carolina Panthers Football Trains Return

Passengers can then take their time and enjoy post-game fun and festivities before making their way back to the Amtrak station in Charlotte for a 7 p.m. departure.
For passenger safety, masks are required in all stations and on board all trains.
