This Week at NCDOT: Powell Bill, Spring Litter Sweep and Ferry Division Job Fair

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Powell Bill

The N.C. Department of Transportation is distributing more than $154.8 million in State Street Aid to Municipalities, known as Powell Bill funds.

The Powell Bill funds are used primarily to resurface municipal streets but also may be used to maintain, repair, construct, or widen streets, bridges, and drainage areas. Municipalities can also use Powell Bill funds to plan, construct and maintain bike paths, greenways or sidewalks.

The fund is named for Junius K. Powell, a former state senator and mayor of Whiteville. Powell was the primary sponsor of the 1951 bill to help the state's cities with urban road problems.

The $154 million will be distributed starting to hundreds of cities and towns.

Spring Litter Sweep

NCDOT’s spring litter sweep runs April 15th through April 29th.

Each year in April and September, NCDOT ramps up efforts to clean up our state’s roads and calls on volunteers for assistance.

Volunteers can request clean-up supplies such as trash bags, gloves and safety vests from local NCDOT county maintenance offices.

Last year alone, over 11 and a half million pounds of litter were picked up.
