RALEIGH – The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) today announced the expansion of its popular self-service kiosks to additional grocery store locations in the Raleigh, Charlotte, and Fayetteville areas. This initiative builds on the successful pilot program launched two years ago and aims to provide greater convenience and access to essential motor vehicle services for North Carolinians.
Since the kiosk pilot began, nearly 90,000 transactions have been completed at these convenient locations, demonstrating strong customer demand for faster, out-of-office service options.
The expansion includes 10 new kiosks being deployed statewide, with nine already installed and operational. The 10th kiosk is scheduled for installation tomorrow in Charlotte. These new kiosks are being placed at select Harris Teeter, Carlie C's, and Publix stores, with one additional kiosk located at the Charlotte South Driver License Office.
Three new kiosks in Wake County bring the total to seven. Mecklenburg County gains five new kiosks for a total of nine. Cumberland County adds two new kiosks for a total of three with a fourth kiosk planned to be installed on base at the Soldier Support Center in the spring.
The self-service kiosks allow customers to complete common transactions quickly and easily, including:
- Driver license and state ID card renewals and duplicates
- Vehicle registration renewals
- Payment of property tax on new vehicles
Upon completion, the kiosk prints a temporary driver license/ID certificate (with photo) or license plate sticker and registration card. Most transactions take just 2-3 minutes when customers come prepared with necessary information, such as their license/ID number or renewal notice.
The kiosk progam comes at no cost to the state. NCDMV's third-party vendor, Neumo, is compensated via a $4.95 convenience fee per transaction. Customers will also be charged a 2 percent card processing fee.
NCDMV Commissioner Paul Tine emphasized the benefits of this partnership.
“We are excited for this partnership to provide increased access to our services and to serve more of our customers away from the office," said Commissioner Paul Tine. “By placing these kiosks in convenient grocery store locations, we're making it easier for North Carolinians to handle routine DMV needs on their own schedules, helping reduce wait times at our offices and improving overall customer service."
