RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.
eLIFT-NC
The North Carolina Department of Transportation's Division of Aviation has been selected by the Federal Aviation Administration to take part in a national pilot program for electric aircraft that take off and land vertically.
The initiative, known as eLIFT-NC, will test the ability of electric aircraft to deliver critical healthcare to patients and medical facilities quicker and more efficiently than it takes helicopters and other traditional medical transportation vehicles.
By partnering with federal leaders and aviation innovators like BETA Technologies and Joby Aviation, North Carolina positions itself at the forefront of advanced air mobility.
Smart Intersection System
The Department is partnering with North Carolina A&T State University and the City of Greensboro to test new smart intersection technology.
The intersection uses advanced sensors like LiDAR, radar and cameras to monitor traffic and track vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in real time.
These capabilities are aimed at making intersections safer by improving congestion management, helping prevent crashes, and supporting faster responses to emergencies.
Spring Litter Sweep
We are one month away from the Spring Litter Sweep, NCDOT's biannual statewide roadside litter removal initiative.
Volunteers interested in helping out will be provided with cleanup supplies including orange safety vests, gloves and trash bags.
