RALEIGH - The North Carolina Turnpike Authority is continuing construction on the eastern portion of the Complete 540 project, Phase 2. This project will extend the Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) from the I-40/I-42/Toll N.C. 540 interchange near Garner and Clayton to the existing I-540/I-87/U.S. 64/U.S. 264 interchange in Knightdale, providing the missing link to complete the outer 540 loop around the greater Raleigh area.
I-87 South between Smithfield Road and Hodge Road is scheduled to temporarily close to traffic overnight beginning on or around April 6 through April 7. The area will close from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night.
Drivers wishing to continue traveling on I-87 South will use the following detour route:
- Continue driving on I-87 South
- Take Exit 7 to access I-540 West
- Continue traveling on I-540 West
- Take Exit 24 to access U.S. 64/Knightdale Boulevard
- Turn left onto U.S. 64/Knightdale Boulevard
- Continue traveling on U.S. 64/Knightdale Boulevard
- Take the ramp to access I-540 East
- Continue traveling on I-540 East
- Take Exit 26A to continue driving on I-87 South
I-87 North between Hodge Road and Smithfield Road is scheduled to temporarily close to traffic overnight beginning on or around April 9 through April 10. The area will close from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night.
Drivers wishing to continue traveling on I-87 North will use the following detour route:
- Continue driving on I-87 North
- Take the ramp to access I-540 West
- Continue traveling on I-540 West
- Take Exit 24 onto U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard
- Turn right onto U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard
- Continue traveling on U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard for approximately 4.5 miles
- Take the ramp to access I-87 North
Drivers wishing to access I-87 North from I-540 East will use the following detour route:
- Continue driving on I-540 East
- Take Exit 24B onto U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard
- Continue traveling on U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard for approximately 4.5 miles
- Take the ramp to access I-87 North
Drivers wishing to access I-87 North from Hodge Road will use the following detour route:
- Continue traveling north on Hodge Road
- Turn right onto U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard
- Continue traveling on U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard for approximately 4.5 miles
- Take the ramp to access I-87 North
Drivers may experience delays and should pay close attention when driving along the posted detour route. Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid the area, if possible. If drivers must be in the area, they are advised to take the detour route.
The temporary closures and associated detours are weather dependent.
