RALEIGH - The North Carolina Turnpike Authority is continuing construction on the eastern portion of the Complete 540 project, Phase 2. This project will extend the Triangle Expressway (Toll N.C. 540) from the I-40/I-42/Toll N.C. 540 interchange near Garner and Clayton to the existing I-540/I-87/U.S. 64/U.S. 264 interchange in Knightdale, completing the outer 540 loop around the greater Raleigh area.
I-87 North and South is scheduled to experience temporary road closures beginning on or around April 13 through April 30 from midnight to 5:00 a.m. each night.
As part of the above work I-87 Northbound and Southbound traffic patterns will shift toward the median to accommodate the construction of new lanes and ongoing bridge construction. These temporary traffic patterns will be in place for the next several months.
Drivers wishing to continue traveling on I-87 North will use the following detour route:
- Continue driving on I-87 North
- Take the ramp (Exit 7) to access I-540 West
- Continue traveling on I-540 West
- Take Exit 24 onto U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard
- Turn right onto U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard
- Continue traveling on U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard for approximately 4.5 miles
- Take the ramp to access I-87 North
Drivers wishing to access I-87 North from I-540 East will use the following detour route:
- Continue driving on I-540 East
- Take Exit 24B onto U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard
- Continue traveling on U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard for approximately 4.5 miles
- Take the ramp to access I-87 North
Drivers wishing to access I-87 North from Hodge Road will use the following detour route:
- Continue traveling north on Hodge Road
- Turn right onto U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard
- Continue traveling on U.S. 64 or Knightdale Boulevard for approximately 4.8 miles
- Take the ramp to access I-87 North
Drivers wishing to continue traveling on I-87 South will use the following detour route:
- Continue driving on I-87 South
- Take Exit 7 to access I-540 West
- Continue traveling on I-540 West
- Take Exit 24 onto U.S. 64 Business or Knightdale Boulevard
- Turn left onto U.S. 64 Business or Knightdale Boulevard
- Immediately take the ramp onto I-540 East
- Continue traveling on I-540 East
- Take Exit 26A onto I-87 South
Drivers may experience delays and should pay close attention when driving along the posted detour route. Drivers are strongly encouraged to avoid the area, if possible. If drivers must be in the area, they are advised to take the detour route.
The temporary traffic pattern shifts, road closures and associated detours are weather dependent.
