NCDOT to Provide Real-Time Updates on Pitt County Project

GREENVILLE – With construction on Allen Road in Pitt County underway, the N.C. Department of Transportation is providing a new tool to offer more updates on the project to the public.

NCDOT will widen approximately 2.3 miles of Allen Road from three to four lanes with a median from Stantonsburg Road to Dickinson Avenue Extension (U.S. 13) in Greenville.

To help residents stay informed, the project team has developed a new subscriber list to provide real-time updates regarding this project via email and text messages. Residents, media and local partners are encouraged to sign up on the project webpage. Subscribers will also receive newsletter updates that feature photos, videos and construction milestones.

Update on Allen Road construction

NCDOT and Barnhill Contracting Co. began clearing the project area on Jan. 19, cutting down trees and preparing the corridor for new travel lanes. Motorists may continue to see intermittent lane closures in the coming weeks as clearing operations continue.

In addition to clearing, crews are currently boring for a 30‑inch pipe at three culvert sites along the length of the project. This process involves directional drilling beneath the roadway and stream to avoid conflicts with existing utilities. Using a drill rig, crews track depths, add pipe as they progress, and inject a stabilizing mixture to prevent the underground bore from collapsing.

Several utility subcontractors will be working along the corridor over the next several months. Upcoming work includes:

  • Water line installation
  • Gas utility installation
  • Continued directional drilling for major utility crossings

Daily lane closures may occur periodically but most work will take place on either side of the existing roadway. Motorists are encouraged to slow down, remain alert and follow posted signage.

Although early phases of construction may appear slow, much of the initial work involves underground utilities and activities that are not immediately visible from the roadway. These steps are critical to prepare the corridor for future widening.
