This Week at NCDOT: Work Zone Awareness Week, National Innovation Awards, Litter Sweep

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Work Zone Awareness Week

Across North Carolina, crews are out every day – on busy interstates and rural roads – working to improve and maintain our roads.

This year's national theme, “Safe Actions Save Lives," is a reminder that the choices drivers make behind the wheel have real consequences.

Slowing down, staying focused and following posted road signs can help prevent crashes and protect the people working just feet away from traffic.

National Innovation Awards

NCDOT has earned two “National Innovation Awards" from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials for advancing safety on North Carolina roads.

One award recognizes a new AI-powered safety tool that helps employees quickly identify hazards in the field.

The other highlights the world's first superstreet interchange, at Interstate 85 and U.S. 64 in Lexington, which is designed to reduce crashes and improve traffic flow.

Both innovations reflect NCDOT's commitment to safer, more efficient transportation systems across the state.

Spring Litter Sweep

Running now through April 25, volunteers interested in helping out with the spring litter sweep will be provided with cleaning supplies including orange safety vests, gloves and trash bags.
