RALEIGH – Staff from the N.C. Department of Transportation joined students, families, state and local leaders for National Walk & Roll to School Day, a national event highlighting the importance of safe, active and accessible routes to school.

Walk and Roll to School Day is more than a yearly tradition, it's an important reminder of how mobility shapes children's lives, giving every student a chance to embrace independence, build healthy habits and feel connected to their community.

A group of students and families gathered at Lakemont Swim and Tennis Club in Raleigh, formed a bike bus to ride to school together, with walkers joining at various points along the route before making their way to Douglas Magnet Elementary School. The school's annual walk encouraged healthy habits and highlighted the importance of mobility.

“Through our NC Safe Routes to School program, we're dedicated to ensuring everyone, especially our students have safe options for getting to school, whether it's walking, biking or riding the bus," said Brennon Fuqua, director of NCDOT's Integrated Mobility Division. “Today demonstrates what's possible when communities work together to prioritize safe routes to school. Investing in safe walking and biking paths means investing in our future."

National Walk & Roll to School Day is celebrated in communities nationwide to encourage pedestrian safety, support healthy lifestyles and build connections among families, schools and local leaders.
