The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to widen approximately 2.3 miles of Allen Road from two to four lanes. The design includes 12-foot-wide lanes, a 23-foot raised grass median, 5-foot bike lanes on both sides of the road, a 2.5-foot curb and gutter, and a 10-foot berm (a raised strip of ground that runs along the side of the road) within a proposed 110-foot right of way.
NCDOT’s preferred design widens Allen Road mostly to the east. The design, one of two considered for the project, was chosen based on public comment and the findings of an environmental assessment that looked at the impacts each design would have on natural resources, cultural resources, landowners and utilities.
