The N.C. Department of Transportation plans to widen Allen Road approximately 2.3 miles from two to four lanes – each lane 12 feet wide. The design also includes a 23-foot raised grass median, 5-foot bike lanes on both sides of the road, a 2.5-foot curb and gutter and a 10-foot berm within a proposed 110-foot right of way.
NCDOT’s preferred design widens Allen Road mostly to the east.
The design was one of two designs that NCDOT considered for the project and chose the proposed design based on public comment as well as the findings of an Environmental Assessment that looked at the impacts each design would have on natural resources, cultural resources, landowner and utilities.
