Project Overview & Purpose
The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing improvements to N.C. 54 – from U.S. 15/501 in Chapel Hill to N.C. 55 in Durham – that would help reduce traffic congestion and provide accommodations for pedestrians, cyclists and transit – buses and light rail.
Safety would also be addressed as the critical crash rate along the corridor exceeds state average. The corridor varies from a six-lane section just south of I-40 to a two-lane section on the north side of the interstate.
N.C. 54 is considered to be of statewide importance and has regional significance because of its prominent role in serving residential, commercial and institutional communities in Chapel Hill and Durham.
This project is listed as Project U-5774 in the
N.C. Department of Transportation's State Transportation Improvement Program and is funded for $295 million.
