Project OverviewThe N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing improvements to N.C. 54 from U.S. 15/501 in Chapel Hill to N.C. 55 in Durham that would reduce traffic congestion and provide accommodations for pedestrians, cyclists and buses.
N.C. 54 parallels I-40 and provides regional access to several large employment centers.
Corridor improvements being considered involve a variety of strategies such as roadway widening, intersection improvements, overpasses, and interchange upgrades.
This project will be reprioritized for funding in the next
State Transportation Improvement Program. A schedule for right of way, utilities and/or construction has not been finalized at this time. However, preliminary engineering activities (design, planning, environmental studies) needed for project development are underway.
