For the proposed project, the N.C. Department of Transportation evaluated various design options – referred to as alternatives – that included widening N.C. 62 to three or four lanes.
Under the recommended alternative, N.C. 62 would be widened to four lanes divided by a raised median. The design would also include bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.
Several existing intersections along the corridor could also be improved under the project.
The development and evaluation of project alternatives involve studying traffic and crash rates, getting input from the public and examining the potential environmental impact an alternative might have on the community and environment.
