U.S. 17 Hampstead Bypass

Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation is making improvements to the U.S. 17 corridor in Pender and New Hanover counties in an effort to improve traffic and safety. Work involves building a bypass around the town of Hampstead in Pender County.

The Hampstead Bypass is being built in two segments:

U.S. 17 Corridor Improvements (U-5732) and the Dan Owen Connector (U-5732A)

The improvements to the U.S. 17 corridor included a separate project from south of Washington Acres Road through Hampstead to Vista Lane. In the summer of 2018, a new alignment connection – now known as the Safe Passage Way – was constructed between Dan Owen Drive and Factory Road.
