The N.C. Department of Transportation is implementing proposed corridor upgrades to U.S. 64 from west of Laura Duncan Road in Apex to U.S. 1 in Cary. Following completion of planning studies, environmental review, and detailed traffic and safety evaluations, a preferred alternative was selected in 2019. The project will address long standing congestion, safety concerns, and multimodal needs in a rapidly growing area where traffic volumes exceed 40,000 vehicles per day and are projected to rise significantly.
Improvements include widening U.S. 64 to a six-lane divided roadway, constructing interchanges at Laura Duncan Road and Lake Pine Drive, and providing new grade separated crossings at Shepherds Vineyard Drive and Edinburgh Drive. Reduced conflict intersections will be installed east of Lake Pine Drive to U.S. 1, improving traffic flow and minimizing crash potential. Pedestrian and bicyclist facilities identified through project planning will be integrated to enhance connectivity between neighborhoods, businesses, schools, parks, and transit stops.
A companion project will replace the CSX S-Line railroad bridge to provide needed horizontal clearance for the future U.S. 64 widening. Replacing the structure eliminates the span limitation, prevents construction conflicts, and supports long term corridor resilience.
These improvements will reduce congestion and travel delays, enhance regional mobility and improve safety by removing conflict points (areas in which vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists merge or interact) and signalized intersections. Together, these improvements will help U.S. 64 meet future transportation demands.
