  • I need an ID. What do I need to do?

    If this is your first North Carolina ID, you can walk in at any driver license office. Walk-ins are accepted all day or until that location reaches capacity. You may also make an appointment​, but it is not required.

    For your visit, you will need to bring $16.75 and the following required documents:

    Some customers qualify for a non-fee ID. Learn more about state IDs.

    If your ID is lost or stolen and has not expired, you can replace it online.

    If your ID is still valid and you simply need to renew it, you can also complete that online.

    If your ID has expired more than two years ago, you must visit a driver license office in person to renew it.

  • How do I replace a lost or stolen license or ID?

    ​You can order a replacement license or ID if:​​

    • Your license or ID has been lost or stolen
    • Your license or ID is damaged or unreadable
    • Your name or mailing address has changed​ (must be completed in-person at a driver license office​​)​
  • How do I change my name on a license or ID?

    If your legal name has changed, you must notify NCDMV within 60 days and obtain a replacement license or ID with your new name. Name changes must be completed in person at a driver license office.

    To complete the name change, bring $16.75​ and the following requirements documents with you:

    • Certified marriage certificate issued by a government agency
    • Documented proof from the courts or the Register of Deeds showing that the name change was legally completed
    • Notarized DL-101 form​

    ​All documents must be issued by an appropriate government agency in the United States, Puerto Rico, U.S. territories or Canada.
