Public Transportation Internship/Apprenticeship

The N.C. Department of Transportation's Public Transportation Internship/Apprenticeship Program gives college and post-graduate students hands-on training in public transportation careers.

Training programs vary with each division or agency within NCDOT, but in a typical fixed-route transit setting apprentices might:

  • Spend time observing the general manager and the governing or advisory board as they carry out management and policy duties
  • Participate in duties such as fleet maintenance and supervision, safety program development and implementation, driver supervision and dispatching, or information dissemination

With exposure to all aspects of a transit system and experience in managing public transportations, participants become equipped to compete for jobs in the transportation field.

Participants complete an independent research project – or a special project – based on the agency's needs and the apprentice's abilities. Past projects have included evaluating system routes and schedules, studying locations for a potential transit corridor, and developing staff training modules.
