The Road Ahead
In early 2025, NCDMV faced long wait times, outdated technology, inefficient processes, and frustration for customers and employees alike. Those challenges were real, and they were unacceptable.
Thanks to the governor, N.C. General Assembly, N.C. Department of Transportation leadership, state auditor, our customers, and most importantly our employees, we are starting to turn the corner. High-impact improvements are already being delivered, and measurable progress is happening now.
The 2026-2030 Strategic Plan builds on that momentum. Developed through broad collaboration, it defines a new mission, vision, purpose, and values centered on the people we serve. Many of the plan’s highest-priority initiatives are already in motion.
This is more than a document, it’s our roadmap to a modern, efficient, customer-focused DMV that North Carolina deserves.

NCDMV is transforming staffing and resource allocation to deliver faster, fairer, and more convenient service statewide. We are committed to maximizing existing state resources, treating employees with respect and fairness, and engaging the public transparently.
By adjusting staffing to match demand and reduce wait times while expanding access and services in rural and underserved areas, we are working toward a future where every North Carolinian can access essential DMV services quickly, easily, and close to home.
