This Week at NCDOT: Siemens Rail Event, Spring Litter Sweep, Employee Kidney Donation

RALEIGH – The following are highlights from this week at the N.C. Department of Transportation. The stories below are also featured in NCDOT Now, the department's weekly newscast.

Siemens Mobility Rail Event

A state-supported facility that is constructing rail cars to be used nationwide is now open in North Carolina.

State and local officials joined Siemens Mobility last week as the company opened a new passenger rail manufacturing facility in Lexington.

Gov. Josh Stein said the $220 million investment will create more than 500 jobs and bolster the state's role in advanced manufacturing.

The state committed a $9.4 million investment for necessary highway and rail projects to support the opening of the facility.

NC By Train anticipates receiving new passenger cars from Siemens as soon as 2027.

Spring Litter Sweep

The N.C. Department of Transportation is gearing up for its Spring Litter Sweep.

The biannual cleanup invites volunteers statewide to help clear roadside litter.

Officials say the effort keeps communities clean and protects the environment.

Employee Kidney Donation

A couple of NCDOT employees recently gave the gift of life, going beyond the job of public service.

April is National Donate Life Month, a time to raise awareness about organ donation.

The two NCDOT employees are being recognized after each donated a kidney to members in their communities.

North Carolinians can sign up to be an organ donor when applying for or renewing a driver's license through the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles website
