Windsocks

Windsocks are cloth tubes in the shape of cones that gauge wind direction and speed – factors that are very important for pilots when landing and taking off. To help reduce weather-related landing accidents, the Division of Aviation offers windsocks to airports and other organizations in North Carolina.

Obtaining Free Windsocks

The Division of Aviation offers free windsocks to publicly owned and operated general aviation airports and heliports in North Carolina. The division also provides windsocks to flight operations departments of other North Carolina state agencies for use at their aviation facilities.

Submitting Requests

There is a limit of two windsocks per size, per order form. Windsocks will only be provided for facilities associated with flight activities. Operations such as waste treatment and private marine operations will not be eligible for Division of Aviation windsocks. These types of operations can obtain windsocks from commercial vendors.

The Division of Aviation's manager of Statewide Programs will be responsible for all policy interpretations and eligibility questions. Additional windsock requests will need to be specifically approved by the manager of Statewide Programs.
