Windsocks are cloth tubes in the shape of cones that gauge wind direction and speed – factors that are very important for pilots when landing and taking off. To help reduce weather-related landing accidents, the Division of Aviation offers windsocks to airports and other organizations in North Carolina.
Obtaining Free Windsocks
The Division of Aviation provides windsocks at zero cost to the following entities in North Carolina:
- Publicly owned and operated airports
- Publicly owned and operated heliports
- Privately-owned, public-use landing areas listed in the FAA Airport Data and Information Portal (ADIP)
- Any State Agency flight operation facility
Submitting Requests
The Division’s windsock program is limited to two (2) windsocks per installed primary and secondary wind indicators per year. Windsock orders are only fulfilled for airfield purposes and not private hangar use.
The Division of Aviation’s Deputy Director of Programs and Planning is responsible for all program interpretations and eligibility questions. Additional windsock requests must be specifically approved by the Deputy Director of Programs and Planning.
