As a result of recent legislation, effective October 1, 2026, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles is moving to an all-electronic registration system, eliminating the requirement for license plate stickers and printed registration cards.
What does this mean for me?
Residents with vehicle(s) registered in North Carolina will no longer receive physical license plate stickers or printed registration cards when you register your vehicle for the first time or renew the registration. Your vehicle registration will continue to be valid as long as you have paid your registration fees and vehicle property taxes on time.
Do I need a printed registration card?
No. There is no longer any need for a physical registration card. Police officers have electronic verification systems that let them know the status of a vehicle’s registration and inspection stations will be able to use your registration renewal notice to look up your vehicle.
Why was this change made?
Effective October 1, 2026, the N.C. General Assembly has eliminated the requirement for printed vehicle registration cards and license plate stickers. Police officers in North Carolina already use electronic verification systems to confirm vehicle registration status in real-time. License plate stickers and printed registration cards have become redundant. Eliminating them will generate significant cost savings for the state and help reduce instances of fraud and counterfeit stickers.

Digital vehicle registration is accepted in most states. If you'd like a backup, download a copy to your device or print one to keep in your vehicle.
You have two options for obtaining a printed copy of your registration card, if you wish. Starting October 1, you can either download a PDF of your registration card for free from our website or request a printed copy of your registration card be mailed to you at an additional cost that is still being determined.
Your vehicle registration information will be available to download from our website when you renew your registration online, at a self-service kiosk, in-person at a license plate agency or by mail. It will also be available on your registration renewal notice as well as your receipt.
No. You will never be asked to hand over your phone to police officers to verify your registration. Officers will verify your registration using their own electronic verification systems.
Yes. This change does not eliminate your responsibility to register your vehicle or pay vehicle property taxes. You must still renew your registration annually and pay all required fees and taxes on time. Failure to do so can result in late fees, citations, interest accrual and/or collection actions.
Yes. You are still required to get a safety inspection before you can register your vehicle or renew the registration. Inspections must be completed within 90 days of renewing your registration. In addition to a safety inspection, vehicles registered in 19 counties are also required to pass an emissions inspection.
Safety inspection technicians will be able to look up your vehicle using the barcode on the digital version of your vehicle registration, your tax property notice or any receipt documenting a recent vehicle transaction.
No. You do not need to remove your old sticker(s) once they have gone away. However, if you would prefer to remove it, you can on or after October 1, 2026.
Updates occur in our system within a couple minutes. If you need documentation before your digital registration is available, the receipt includes any relevant information that may be needed by a third party.
Yes, receipts will reflect your recent renewal and include the information needed to identify your vehicle and prove your registration is up to date. There will also be a QR code on the receipt that will take you to our website where you can download a PDF of your registration or order a printed copy from us at an additional cost.
