Established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the
National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, or NEVI, provides nearly $5 billion to help states create a national network of 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations along designated alternative fuel corridors. North Carolina expects to receive up to $109 million to build electric vehicle infrastructure along its corridors.
Program Phases
Phase 1 - Build a network of fast charging stations along designated alternative fuel corridors to support regional travel. About 40 charging stations will be funded to be used throughout N.C.
Phase 2 – Build community level electric vehicle charging infrastructure to support electric vehicles in the state, particularly in disadvantaged communities.
The NEVI Program is structured to reimburse private companies up to 80 percent of the cost to construct and operate electric vehicle charging stations for a five-year period. After five years, the charging stations will continue to operate without government support.
The N.C. Department of Transportation submitted its
Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment Plan in September 2024, to the U.S. Department of Transportation. This plan provides an overview of the goals and implementation of the NEVI Program.
