Toll Collection

NC Quick Pass Transponder
As part of open-road tolling, the N.C. Turnpike Authority uses an electronic toll-collection program called NC Quick Pass in which users can be billed by mail or have tolls automatically deducted from a pre-paid account.

Pre-Paid Transponder Accounts

Drivers can purchase an electronic transponder – a small device installed on a windshield, headlamp or front bumper – from an NC Quick Pass Customer Service Center and set up a pre-paid account to receive up to a 35 percent discount off the bill-by-mail toll rate.

When a vehicle with an NC Quick Pass transponder passes through a toll gantry on a North Carolina toll facility, radio frequency readers automatically deduct the toll payment from the associated pre-paid account.

Drivers can also use select NC Quick Pass transponders on toll facilities in other states that accept E-Z Pass, SunPass and Peach Pass as a payment method. Out-of-state drivers can use E-Z Pass, SunPass and Peach Pass accounts to pay for North Carolina tolls.

Bill by Mail

For a vehicle without an NC Quick Pass transponder, high-speed video cameras capture an image of the license plate, and the NC Quick Pass customer service center mails an invoice to the registered owner.

Because of the cost of collection associated with the video camera toll program, bill-by-mail customers are not eligible for a discount.

Customers can pay Bill by Mail invoices online, by mail or by calling or visiting an NC Quick Pass Customer Service Center.
