Smart Roadway Incident Detection Pilot Program

Valerann’s Lanternn platform provides real-time, AI-powered insights to help operators quickly detect and respond to roadway incidents.

The N.C. Turnpike Authority is testing an incident detection pilot program on the express lanes portion of I-485 in Charlotte to make traffic management safer, efficient and more reliable.

Through a partnership with software company, Valerann, NCTA is testing a program called Lanternn. This AI-powered platform provides Traffic Management Center operators faster and more accurate information about what’s happening on the roadway.

The pilot focuses on identifying situations that may affect travel, including:

  • Crashes
  • Stopped or slow-moving vehicles
  • Pedestrians on the roadway
  • Wrong-way drivers
  • Other unusual conditions that could impact traffic

Lanternn gathers and analyzes real-time data from the NCTA’s existing network of traffic cameras, navigation platforms and additional third-party sources. This automated approach detects incidents earlier, verifies them faster and reduces reliance on continuous manual camera monitoring.

Currently, operators must scan multiple camera feeds to spot potential issues. Lanternn accelerates this process and improves accuracy by automatically identifying potential or verified impacts. For example, if traffic begins to slow, the platform proactively searches for contributing factors and delivers earlier alerts to operators.

This pilot represents a significant step forward in using cutting-edge technology and AI to enhance roadway safety and keep drivers moving. It also strengthens the  NCTA’s commitment to innovation and proactive traffic management, ensuring that its tools advance along with its  roadway system to better protect the people who depend on it every day.
