TAP+: Transportation Apprenticeship Program

The N.C. Department of Transportation announces the launch of its Transportation Apprenticeship Program, or TAP+. This innovative program is designed to develop a skilled workforce for the future of transportation in North Carolina. NCDOT is partnering with North Carolina’s community colleges to produce TAP+, which will provide hands-on training and career opportunities for aspiring engineering technicians.

Apprentices will gain invaluable experience in various transportation-related fields. TAP+ is committed to creating pathways for individuals from all backgrounds, including those traditionally underrepresented in the transportation industry.

Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of the transportation industry, earn competitive wages and benefits, and have the opportunity to advance their careers within NCDOT. These vital roles are essential to the success of NCDOT projects, from design to construction.​

Eligibility Requirements

  • ​Currently enrolled in an Associate of Applied Science program focused on Civil Engineering Technology or Survey/Geomatics Technology​​
  • Interest in a transportation construction and engineering career
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team 
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to safety

  • Does the TAP+ program cover the tuition cost for the related instruction (community college tuition) for the apprentice?

    ​The TAP+ program does not cover the tuition cost for the apprentice. However, the TAP+ program will pay up to 15 hours per week for the apprentice to attend community college training. The 15 hours is part of the full-time 40-hour work week.​

  • Is there a grade point average (GPA) that the apprentice must maintain?

    ​Yes. The apprentice must maintain a 2.3 GPA to remain in the program.​

  • Is there a penalty for not attending/dropping out of the related instruction/community college training.
    ​Yes. If the apprentice drops out of the community college training, the apprentice will be separated from the TAP+ program and will no longer be employed with NCDOT.



  • How will TAP+ staff know if the apprentice is still enrolled in college?
    ​Each semester the apprentice will be required to submit to the TAP+ office an unofficial transcript. The transcript will show if the apprentice is still enrolled in school.



  • Is the TAP+ program approved by the U.S. Department of Labor?

    ​Yes. The TAP+ program is federally approved by the U.S. Department of Labor and is monitored by Apprenticeship NC which is the governing body in North Carolina.




  • Are the TAP+ positions paid? If so, how much?
    ​Yes. As an entry level professional at the NCDOT, Apprentices are offered a starting salary of $35,984 and are eligible to receive salary adjustments upon successful completion of all apprentice steps.  Upon completion of the program, Apprentices will be eligible for a salary of $49,477.




  • Will the TAP+ positions rotate to other units within NCDOT?
    ​TAP+ positions will not rotate to other units within NCDOT. When apprentices are hired they will stay with the division during the duration of the program.



  • What will the apprentice receive once they have completed the program?
    ​After completing the program each apprentice will receive a Journeyworker Card from the United States Department of Labor and a Certificate of Completion from ApprenticeshipNC. A Journeyworker Card signifies that the apprentice has completed a certain level of training and education in a skill trade or craft.



  • What happens when the apprentice completes the TAP+ program?
    ​When apprentices finish the program they will remain an NCDOT employee as an Engineering Technician I. 



  • Are there benefits for the hired apprentice?
    Once the apprentice is hired they will be a full-time state of North Carolina employee. Health care, paid time off, retirement, sick leave etc. You can find more information by visiting the North Carolina Office of State Human Resources​
