​​​​​​​​Can I replace my license or ID?

You can order a replacement or duplicate driver license or ID card online, at a kiosk, or at an N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles driver license office if:​

  • Your license has been lost or stolen
  • Your license is damaged or unreadable
  • Your name or mailing address has changed
What do I need to replace my license or ID?

To order a duplicate driver license or ID card online, you must have a valid license (with an "active" status) or valid ID as well as a photo on file with NCDMV that is no more than five years old. You need to know your driver license or ID number to order a replacement online. If your license or ID was lost or stolen, here are some places to check for your driver license or ID number​:

  • ​Vehicle registration card
  • Car insurance company
  • Employer, school, or university records​
  • Doctor’s office
  • Rental or lease agreement
  • Bank or credit union
  • Tax preparation services

Can I replace my license or ID online?

You may replace your license or ID online unless you meet any of the following:

  • Have a suspended license or outstanding debt with NCDMV
  • Are applying for a duplicate commercial driver license with a P or S endorsement
  • Have a U.S. government document indicating legal presence
  • Want to get an N.C. REAL ID license

What if I changed my name?

You have 60 days to notify the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles of name changes and to get a duplicate driver license reflecting your new name.

To request a duplicate license because of a name change, you must:

  1. Change your name with the Social Security Administration at least 36 hours before requesting a duplicate license or ID.
  2. Visit an NCDMV driver license office with proof of the name change, such as a marriage certificate, divorce decree or document from the courts or Register of Deeds.
