The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles accepts cash, money orders, personal checks and Visa, MasterCard, American Express and Discover credit and debit cards at
all NCDMV office locations.
- Payments in the form of check submitted in person must:
- Be made payable to NCDMV
- Be accompanied by a valid driver license or identification card, U.S. Passport, or U.S. Military ID
- Be written in blue or black ink
- Have the check holder's pre-printed name, address and phone number
- Be issued by a North Carolina-based bank or a bank with a branch in North Carolina
A credit or debit card is required for online transactions requiring payment.
Card processing fees
Card processing fees vary depending on where the transaction occurs. NCDMV charges the following:
- In office - 1.22 percent
- Online - 1.85 percent
- Kiosk - 2 percent
Returned debt
NCDMV services may be blocked for individuals who have paid for or received a DMV service with a returned check, returned ACH, or a credit card chargeback.
NCDMV applies a 10 percent additional tax (a minimum of $10) to all returned items, and an interest penalty is applied monthly if the balance due is not paid within 30 days.
How to make a payment
Customers should confirm amount due before submitting payment via MoneyGram. Please call (919) 707-4260 or email dmvrc@ncdot.gov to confirm your amount.
Paying fees online
Fees can be paid online using MoneyGram or in person at any Walmart MoneyGram location.
If using the MoneyGram website, please follow the directions closely:
- Go to the MoneyGram website.
- Click "Pay Bill"
- Enter 18884 where it asks for a Biller Name or Receive Code
- When NC DMV Driver Returned Check (18884) shows click on the selection or
- hit enter on your keyboard.
- Click “Pay Bill"
- Enter the amount due and click “Pay this Biller"
- Select a payment option (debit/credit card) and then click “Next"
- You will be asked to create an account for MoneyGram
- Fill out the “Biller Information" section by entering your phone number and Biller Account Number (your reference number or driver license or state ID number).
Please note: Payments received after 2 p.m. EST will post on the next business day. Any payments received prior to 2 p.m. EST will post same day and you may return to the DMV to receive service.
Pay by mail or mail overnight using USPS
Individuals can also make payments for a returned item by money order, cashier's check or certified check, which should include the individual's reference number. Personal checks and business checks are not accepted as a form of payment for a returned item.
